Key Stage 4

Core PE / GCSE PE

Core PE

All pupils at St Joseph’s will continue with Core PE, which will build on the sports and fitness knowledge they have gained and honed during Key Stage 3. Core PE will continue to support pupils to develop resilience, teamwork and strategic skills alongside increasing physical expertise.

Additionally, PE supports the development of discipline, time management, and a sense of responsibility, all of which are key transferable skills helpful beyond the sports field. Core PE is an essential part of the school’s offering at KS4.

GCSE PE

The PE specification provides the learner with stimulating, relevant, engaging and topical issues that will equip them with the knowledge and understanding they need to continue their academic development in physical education.

Students will also gain an understanding of how physical activities benefit health, fitness and well-being. Practical assessment is 40% of the course with a refined list of activities to be assessed in. Pupils are assessed as a player/performer within 3 sporting activities and must write a critical evaluation of one of their performances as part of the coursework element.

The GCSE PE course consists of both theoretical and practical components, with the majority (60%) theory-based. Of that 60%, half is scientific in nature (Anatomy and Physiology) and half is the study of psychology in sport. At the same time, the practical nature of the course means that pupils must have a keen interest in sport and be a regular participant to outside clubs e.g. Football club, Cricket club, Athletics club etc.
