It has been another busy and rewarding period at St Joseph’s, with many opportunities for our pupils to develop both inside and outside the classroom.
Our football teams recently competed against Wyvern, demonstrating excellent determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout. Although the results did not go as we had hoped, we are proud of the effort, commitment and positive attitude shown by all involved. Similarly, congratulations to those who represented the school in the recent health competition. Their enthusiasm and willingness to challenge themselves were commendable.
Pupils also benefited from a valuable visit to Andover College, helping them to explore the range of Post-16 opportunities available. Understanding future pathways and potential career options is an important part of preparing young people for success beyond school. Our Duke of Edinburgh participants continue to exemplify resilience and character. Following the rescheduling of one event, students adapted positively and demonstrated the perseverance that lies at the heart of the award.
Finally, our International Day and Languages Week celebrations have been a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the diverse cultures, languages and traditions within our community, enriching pupils’ cultural capital and broadening their understanding of the world around them.
As we reflect on these experiences, we are reminded that education is about much more than academic success. It is about developing character, resilience and a sense of belonging within a wider community. This reflects the words of St Paul: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” (Colossians 3:23). Whether on the sports field, exploring future pathways, undertaking Duke of Edinburgh challenges or celebrating the richness of different cultures, our pupils continue to embody this spirit through their commitment, courage and willingness to grow.

A Wonderful Start to the Year
It has been an especially encouraging week for chaplaincy at St Joseph’s. I have been delighted by the response from pupils who have expressed an interest in becoming part of our School Chaplaincy Team. We have received well over 30 applications – approaching 40 pupils – from Years 7 to 10, which is a tremendous sign of enthusiasm, generosity and willingness to serve our school community.
What has made this response even more special has been reading the reasons pupils have given for wanting to join the chaplaincy. Their words show a real desire to help others, grow in faith and become more involved in the life of the school. Pupils wrote things such as:
“I want to help others and enjoy time getting to know others.”
“To help others and try to help improve SJCS.”
“I would like to be involved with school community activities.”
“I’m Catholic and would like to extend my faith.”
“Because I like RE and I like helping people.”
“I am involved with my Catholic faith and would like to help others on their journey.”
One pupil beautifully wrote that they were “starting my journey to get closer to God,” while others spoke about wanting to learn more about their religion, support fellow students, take part in liturgies and reach out to the wider community. These responses are a wonderful reminder that chaplaincy is not simply about joining another school activity; it is about putting faith into action, serving others and growing together as a community.
During tutor time, I will be inviting both our returning school chaplains and those who have newly expressed an interest to join me for our first gathering in the new school chapel. It will be an opportunity to meet together, share ideas and begin thinking about the year ahead. We will look at how the chaplaincy team can contribute to the spiritual life of our school, support prayer and liturgy, and continue the successful outreach work with local schools and the wider community that was such an important part of our work last year.
With such a wonderful number of pupils wanting to be involved, we will also begin putting together a rota so that everyone has an opportunity to participate. My hope is that, through the year, our young chaplains will not only serve others but will themselves have opportunities to grow spiritually, morally and personally, discovering more deeply what it means to live out the Gospel in everyday life.
Another real highlight this week has been the excellent series of assemblies delivered across the different year groups. It was particularly wonderful to see Ms Snook’s energetic and engaging Fairtrade assembly, complete with Fairtrade bananas being offered as prizes for pupils taking part in the quiz! The atmosphere was lively, enthusiastic and full of pupil participation, and it was lovely to see so much energy and excitement in the room.
More importantly, the assembly carried a very significant message. Fairtrade gives us a practical way of thinking about justice, dignity, fairness and our responsibility towards others around the world. It was a wonderful example of Catholic Social Teaching being brought to life in a way that pupils could easily understand and relate to. The themes naturally connected with Religious Education, Geography, History and many other areas of the curriculum, reminding us that our Catholic identity is not simply something we talk about in RE lessons, but something that should shape the way we understand and respond to the world around us.
It has been lovely to see such high-quality assemblies taking place from Monday through to Thursday, with so much enthusiasm and engagement from both staff and pupils. These moments help to make our shared values more tangible and show how faith, learning and service can come together across the whole school.
