Congratulations to the Year 8 & 9 Football teams who both won their first fixtures of the season this week.
Year 9s vs Sarum Academy
The first 15 minutes both sides were neck and neck with St Joseph’s just having the upper hand, however the rest of the game belonged to St Joseph’s. Final score was 7-1 with goals being scored by J. Orton (4), R. Tanner (1), E. Nash (1) and H. Iles (1).
A fantastic performance by all of the team but a big thank you to the year 8 players who played up in the older age group.
Very difficult to name the Man of the Match due to so many great performances, however special mention would have to go to team captain Joe Orton for scoring 4 goals, along with Ben Chalk who had a brilliant game in Central Defence.
Year 8s vs Trafalgar
With a couple of regular starters missing the year 8s faced a strong test against Trafalgar. A very bright start from St Joseph’s saw them produce some excellent attacking football and take the lead twice in the opening half, first through J. Atkinson and then S.Buckett. Sadly an injury to O. Taylor led to a change of formation which left several players out of position and Trafalgar went into half time with a 3-2 lead.
Using the break to reorganise St Joseph’s came out firing in the second half, attacking relentlessly and creating lots of chances, only to be halted by a superb display from the Trafalgar goalkeeper. E. Nash levelled the scores, connecting with a well taken corner 10 minutes from time. With only seconds left in the match it was S. Webb who refused to be denied and popped up to tuck home from close range, capping a fine performance and securing a 4-3 win for St Joseph’s!
This win comes as a result of a superb team performance, it would not be fair to name a man of the match when every single member of the squad gave 100% from start to finish and all contributed to the outcome. Special mention does go to those players who had to spend large spells of the game out of position, sacrificing for the good of the team.
