Army STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) forms part of the British Army’s engagement activity and aims to increase awareness and understanding among young people aged 7-24 of what engineers do within Defence. The Army is keen to inspire, attract and inform young people about the technical and engineering skills utilised on a day-to-day basis within the Royal Signals.

With this in mind, the Royal Signals were offering 120 young people between the ages of 14-16 the opportunity to come and see why STEM/cyber skills are so important to a modern Army.

We took 15 pupils (Year 10 & 11) along to Blandford Camp to have the opportunity to learn and compete amongst other teams in a fully immersive, AI-powered, multi-player online cybersecurity training and assessment platform designed for government, academic and enterprise institutions. The platform mirrored actual networks and used real-time threat intelligence, machine learning and gamification to educate and prepare cybersecurity teams for protecting against ever-evolving cyberattacks. The difficulty level ranged from basic to hard and was scored appropriately. Technical advice and support was on hand to help our teams, which was provided by the Royal Signals Cyber Protection Team.

Why take part?

The event was an opportunity for our young people to learn about engineering, particularly technical opportunities and gain experience of how technology (cyber) relates to the modern military. The day was designed to complement work that will be taking place in the classrooms as part of the normal school curriculum. Participants had the opportunity to take part in a fun indoor activity that is current in everyday life whether we know it or not.

Pupils also had the opportunity to try on some Army webbing and parachute pack to see how much weight soldiers had to carry around. The Royal Signals Museum were also there showcasing the history of the radio, which was fascinating. Pupils also had the opportunity to make an Ethernet cable keyring.

The pupils had a great day out – Team Loki coming 3rd and Team Zeus coming 7th overall.
